Keeping Trade Moving: Marine Insights from IUMI 2026
When risk grows more complex, the right marine insurer becomes a strategic advantage.
What does it take to insure global trade when conflict, shifting trade routes, new technologies and the energy transition are reshaping marine risk? That question was at the centre of this year’s International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) conference, held in Rotterdam from 20 to 23 September 2026.
AIG and Talbot Marine teams joined insurers, brokers and industry partners from around the world to discuss how the industry can support shipowners, cargo owners and logistics companies as they respond to a more complex and fast-moving risk environment.

Marine Risks in Focus
The conference theme, “Anchoring Trust in a Contested World,” reflected the issues many marine clients are facing today. Geopolitical instability, war risk, supply chain disruption, new vessel fuels and high-value cargo exposures are reshaping trade patterns and influencing how many risks are assessed, priced and managed. Sessions on loss prevention and ocean hull also explored how technology, larger vessels, complex machinery and rising repair costs are also changing the marine risk landscape.
For clients and brokers, this reinforces the importance of working with a marine insurer that understands their operations, provides clear guidance and can respond quickly when it matters most.
That is where AIG and Talbot Marine can make a meaningful difference. Our teams work closely with clients and brokers to build a clear view of each risk, particularly where exposures are changing quickly, such as complex supply chains and high-value cargo. This specialist perspective, combined with risk consulting, claims experience and global insight, helps clients make informed decisions in a challenging environment.
“IUMI was a valuable reminder that trust is built through consistency, clarity and partnership. Clients are managing multiple risks at once, and they need insurers who understand their operations and are ready to support them when it counts,” says Colin Sprott, AIG’s Global Head of Marine.
Looking Ahead
The discussions in Rotterdam reinforced the important role marine insurance plays in supporting global trade and helping businesses adapt to change. By combining specialist insight, dependable claims support and long-term broker and client partnerships, AIG and Talbot Marine teams are well placed to support clients as they plan for the future.
