U.S. airports are mandated by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) to manage safety risk and adopt a formal Safety Management Systems (SMS). While the FAA SMS protocols invoke safety due diligence for airside operations, it imposes no such undertaking for the landside infrastructure, with its equally attendant public liabilities. In recent cases there have been multi-million dollar public liability claims paid out where the causal factors were due to poorly maintained landside infrastructures. In contrast to airside only operations (SMS), Integrated Management Systems (IMS) are more comprehensive and encapsulate safety, environmental and quality oversight for all aspects of airport operations.
