Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the influenza viruses. It is primarily transmitted from person to person through coughing or sneezing. Even healthy people can get sick from the flu and spread it to others. The findings of a recent review of related published literature indicate that influenza vaccination of health care personnel can enhance patient safety. Annual influenza vaccination has been found to be both safe and effective in reducing the risk of influenza and health-care related transmission and is recommended for all HCP. By adopting recommendations for all HCP annual influenza vaccination, health care providers will promote a culture of patient and worker safety within their organizations.
